In rural Punjab, India, poor nutrition and ill health are widespread, particularly among women. Despite the state’s agricultural wealth, many women suffer from malnutrition due to poverty, limited resources, and sociocultural norms that prioritize male nutritional needs. To address these challenges, BGR partner Building Bridges India trains women to grow organic vegetables that they can sell or use to prepare substantial meals that preserve essential nutrients.

This year’s project is expanding upon previous years’ programming to include 25 families from five villages. The women, mostly landless seasonal workers, will be the focus of the year’s workshops, learning the skills required to establish kitchen gardens and enhance their skills and knowledge about organic farming techniques, garden management, and preparing nutrient-dense meals using fresh, locally grown produce. Additional workshops will focus on women’s health and nutrition and on cooking techniques. The project will serve 425 direct beneficiaries.
