In Sri Lanka, one-quarter of the population lives below the poverty line, and nearly one-third of children under 5 are malnourished, according to the World Food Programme. BGR partner Child Action Lanka (CAL) serves children from some of the most vulnerable communities across Sri Lanka, including slum-based and street-connected communities, families affected by extreme poverty, and those still experiencing the lingering social and economic effects of the civil war.
This project supports a meal program serving 250 preschool-age children, a breakfast program for 30 children with special needs, and essential school supplies for 325 children at risk of expulsion or dropping out of school because of a lack of these necessities. This year’s project also provides educational support and daily meals for 10 children residing at CAL’s Shelter Home for street-connected and displaced children.
This project is co-sponsored by BGR’s European sister organization, Mitgefühl in Aktion (MiA).
