In Vietnam, the price of a hospital stay does not include food. Already challenged by hospital expenses, many patients and their families are hard-pressed to buy food, so necessary to recuperation from illness. Since 2009, support from BGR has helped the Tam Binh chapter of the Vietnam Red Cross provide thousands of free meals to patients at the Tam Binh hospital. The 200-bed hospital serves a rural area with almost 500,000 residents.
This BGR grant supports a Red Cross initiative purchasing the rice, tofu, vegetables, cooking oil, and fuel needed to provide 1,344 hot meals each week to hospital patients in need, benefiting an estimated 2,178 people, including more than 300 children under age 5 and 400 children 5–18 years of age. The meals are prepared and served by local volunteers. This project supports the nutritional needs of some of the most vulnerable people—those who are both poor and sick.
