This project is designed to address the critical issue of malnutrition among children in the vulnerable population of Mukuru slums, Nairobi. With stunting rates as high as 32 percent and a significant prevalence of Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM), the community faces severe health challenges exacerbated by poverty and inadequate access to nutritious diets and clean water. This situation has been exacerbated by recent severe flooding that destroyed homes as well as sources of livelihood.

A project with the Ruben Centre aims to foster healthy, sustainable development for community residents of all ages. Through the Centre’s greenhouse and urban farm, urban farming and skills training is provided to local residents and students. A school feeding program is providing healthy lunches to 3,500 primary-school students. The project will implement baby-friendly community initiatives and improve WASH facilities in health centers, addressing hygiene and sanitation issues that contribute to illness and worsen malnutrition. Additionally, the Centre will provide supplementary feeding and nutritious meals for children under 10 at the RC Baby Care and Nutrition Clinic and Special Needs Education Centre. Our partner estimates that more than 20,000 family members of project participants indirectly benefit from these programs.
