State violence against opposition groups in eastern Myanmar, also known as Burma, has had a horrific effect on the nation’s children. Roughly 2.6 million people have been displaced, disrupting daily life and children’s sense of safety. Government forces have intentionally targeted schools in order to terrorize dissidents, while conflicts between armed opposition groups have disrupted community life and sometimes spilled over into rural campuses.
BGR partner New Eden Charity Foundation (NECF) is working to maintain the educational development of displaced children and create a sense of safety and stability. Through this project, NECF is distributing school kits to 900 children, ages 5 to 18, who are living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps near Kanpalet Township. The supplies—including notebooks, pencils and erasers, rulers, alphabet charts, and other essentials—will help them continue their education while giving them a sense of hope and agency.
