The ongoing human rights crisis in Nicaragua has resulted in skyrocketing food costs and unemployment, the confiscation of land and personal property by the government, and economic collapse. In the rural communities served by BGR partner North Country Mission of Hope, only 25 percent of families have safe drinking water and sanitary facilities. Children are the most vulnerable; among the children served by our partner here, 47 percent suffer from chronic malnutrition, and almost 90 percent have not received basic early childhood health care. While there is a legal mandate requiring six years of schooling, only 39 percent of Nicaraguan children complete the six years.

This grant sponsors the educations of 100 girls in primary and secondary school. Each student in the program receives schoolbooks and the government-mandated school uniform and insignia, along with shoes, socks, underwear, and bras. Additionally, each student receives annual physicals at the medical clinic located on the Mission of Hope compound in Chiquilistagua near Managua, parasite medicine, and feminine hygiene kits as needed. Tutoring and food support are also provided for girls who need additional assistance.
