Located on a six-acre plot in the Himalayan region of Tawang, in Arunachal Pradesh, BGR partner Mahabodhi Tawang Centre provides housing, food, quality education, and health care to 165 local children in need. The center also provides tuition and room and board for nine girls pursuing higher education, and at the Mahabodhi Old Age Home provides residential care for seventeen elders.
Located at 12,000 feet of altitude in an area of northeastern India known for its harsh climatic conditions, Tawang remains largely cut off from the rest of the world in winter, due to heavy snowfall that lasts from November through March each year. People survive on cheese and dry vegetables during winter; the few vegetables and fruits that are available in the market are too costly for most residents due to the high costs of transporting these items by road from Assam state, some 200 miles away. The scarcity of nutritious food leads to malnutrition in children and consequent health issues.
BGR partially funds the center’s food program, which provides nutritious meals three times a day to 216 people, including 165 children, plus elderly people, monks, and organization staff. Annually renewable project
