On August 26, a landslide and glacial collapse on Langtang Lirung, a mountain in Lāṅṭāṇ National Park, Nepal, sent millions of metric tons of rock, ice, and debris flooding down some 4,000 feet in altitude, destroying everything in its path—roads, bridges, buildings, and in some cases entire communities. As of September 2, the death toll exceeded 1,100 people. An estimated 10,000 people are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance.
In response to this urgent need, BGR has made crisis-relief donations to Karuna-Shechen, a Buddhist humanitarian organization working in the Himalayas, and the nonprofit World Central Kitchen, which is opening community kitchens serving thousands of meals to people impacted by the disaster.
To directly support the Nepalese government’s relief efforts, the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund is accepting online donations. Other relief organizations working on the ground in Nepal include the U.N. agencies UNICEF, the World Food Program, and the World Health organization; the Nepal Red Cross Society; and NGOs including CARE and Catholic Relief Services.
