At the heart of this effort is generosity (dāna). True generosity does not seek recognition or reward. Its joy lies simply in easing another’s hardship — in giving quietly, wholeheartedly, and especially in times of great need.

Since 2008, Buddhist Global Relief (BGR), founded by Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi and a group of students, have been working to relieve chronic hunger and malnutrition around the world. Guided by compassion and grounded in wisdom, BGR supports projects in many countries — including Sri Lanka, where Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi was ordained and later served as President of the Buddhist Publication Society.

For many, Bhikkhu Bodhi’s writings — such as The Noble Eightfold Path — offered an early glimpse into the Dhamma’s depth and clarity. That small book, rich in meaning yet free of excess, reflects the same spirit as this annual fundraiser: small acts of compassion creating great impact.

Every contribution becomes part of something greater — a field of shared kindness and compassion that nourishes both giver and receiver. And even those who may not give directly can still take part through ‘anumodana’: rejoicing in the goodness of others. This opportunity to share in merit and wholesome deeds is open to all, regardless of faith, nationality, age, or gender — for compassion knows no boundaries.
