In Kenya’s highly populated Kisumu County, a lack of diversified crop and livestock production has resulted in food insecurity and low income, leading to limited livelihoods and inadequate nutrition. Poor soils that have been degraded by erosion and the use of synthetic pesticides exacerbate these problems.
A project led by new BGR partner the Farmers Alliance for Restoration/PermEZone trains 30 beneficiaries as lead farmers by equipping them with knowledge through workshops on permaculture skills and techniques. These lead farmers in turn train 19 farmers each through peer-to-peer extension, allowing the project to reach 600 farm families. The focus is on permaculture, a system of agriculture emphasizing the use of renewable natural resources and the enrichment of local ecosystems. The curriculum also includes training in agroecological farming techniques, farmer-to-farmer extension, record-keeping, collaborative citizen science, nutrition, and community-building.
