BGR partner the Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center serves the low-income population of southeastern Pima County, Arizona, a mostly rural area. This project will address poverty in Summit, Arizona, a small community with a household poverty rate of 23 percent, one of the three lowest income rural communities in Arizona.

This project focuses on 49 children, up to 5 years old, who are enrolled in the pre-school Head Start program. These children come from families with incomes below the poverty line who need supplemental nutrition. During the week they receive daytime food in the Head Start program, but they need additional nutrition on weekends.

This program will deliver weekend nutrition backpacks to Head Start children at Summit View Elementary School. Additionally, the project will provide food boxes to nine families not already receiving food at the school’s food pantry.
