In Vietnam, the price of a hospital stay does not include food. Already challenged by hospital expenses, many patients and their families are hard-pressed to buy food, so necessary to recuperation from illness. Since 2009, support from BGR has helped the Tam Binh chapter of the Vietnam Red Cross provide thousands of free meals to patients at the Tam Binh hospital. The 200-bed hospital serves a rural area with almost 500,000 residents.

With the grant from BGR, the Tam Binh local chapter of the Red Cross can purchase the rice, tofu, vegetables, cooking oil, and fuel needed to serve more than 20,000 hospital patients, providing economic relief to the patients and 83,000 family members. This project supports the nutritional needs of some of the most vulnerable people—those who are both poor and sick.
