People planting rice seedlings in a flooded paddy field.

This project with longtime BGR partner the International Cooperation Center (ICC) aims to promote the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) among smallholder farmers in the Phu Thuong commune of Vietnam. ICC is an academic center of Thai Nguyen University that initiates many research and development projects. Its experts have deep experience in rice production, agroecology, and rural development. The ICC has trained many farmers SRI, improving productivity and reducing the use of ecologically harmful chemicals. This project aims to improve farmers’ income by (1) connecting them with an expanded market of potential customers and (2) educating urban customers about the health benefits of organically grown rice, potentially raising prices for SRI-grown rice. The ICC will provide direct training and networking opportunities to 30 farmers (24 of them women) and estimates that 1,000 farmers will benefit from the project. Annually renewable project
