Sri Lanka has South Asia’s second highest rate of severe acute malnutrition, according to UNICEF, and nearly one in six children here suffer from chronic wasting. In 2022, severe inflation and economic collapse resulted in crisis-level hunger across this nation of 22 million people, as food prices rose by almost 100 percent.
BGR partner Child Action Lanka offers nutritional and educational support out of child-development centers serving impoverished families. This project expands an existing BGR-funded meal program into two new districts, serving 220 preschool-age children, as well as a breakfast program for 30 special-needs children. This year’s project will also provide a set of school necessities for 400 children at risk of expulsion or dropping out of school because of a lack of these necessities.
