In Sri Lanka’s North Eastern Province, many families find it difficult to provide their children with sufficient calories, let alone nutritious meals. Rates of malnutrition are high here due to widespread poverty, and thousands of children arrive at school hungry each day. Their last substantial meal may have been the previous day’s supper, likely a low-nutrition meal they ate at home. This has devastating consequences on their education; hungry children face a grave struggle to concentrate and to learn.
This project from BGR partner Shraddha Charity Organization will provide 166 poor schoolchildren, half of them girls, with a nutritious breakfast daily for the duration of the 2022–23 school year. Children will be screened for eligibility by their school, and those deemed as needing food aid due to undernourishment will be invited to apply for the scholarship. The meals will give the children much-needed nutrients and energy to focus on their studies, giving them a path out of generational poverty. Existing partner, new project.
