Poverty in Vietnam is highly concentrated in rural areas. Families work mainly in the agricultural sector, with limited employment opportunities available elsewhere. They have minimal access to credit, infrastructure, social services, and health care. The poverty facing these families has forced parents to keep their children at home as they could not afford the expenses associated with enrolling them in school. Also having the children working alongside them—especially girls—help ease the economic hardship.
With help from BGR, the Vietnam Red Cross sponsors scholarships for elementary, middle, and high school students in Dong Nai Province’s Cam Duong commune and Vinh Long Province’s Tam Binh District. The grant will provide school fees and the cost of uniforms and educational materials for 400 students in Cam Duong and 329 students in Tam Binh over the next school year. The opportunities the scholarships provide will help students escape the cycle of poverty common in the region.
