BGR partner Building Bridges India works in Sangrur, India, to support and empower the widows of men who committed suicide because of poverty and indebtedness. Soaring interest rates and harassment from banks to repay their husbands’ loans often force the women to sell their land and homes in order to support their families in the short term. While most are eager to find gainful employment, non-agricultural job opportunities for women are limited, leaving the widows and their families facing economic hardship.
Through a previous BGR-funded project, Building Bridges India has established vocational training programs providing coursework in sewing and embroidery, garment and home décor design, and business and entrepreneurship skills to women in need. This year, Building Bridges will also establish a showroom for women to exhibit and sell their products; the organization will also offer literacy classes, counseling opportunities, and legal advice to those who need it. This project will provide vocational training to 375 women, including 125 new students. Annually renewable project.
