Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center, in southern Arizona, provides food to more than 10,000 low-income people each year. Since its founding in 2009, the center has expanded greatly, but in this area where a quarter of residents live in economic insufficiency, “we cannot feed people out of poverty.” To this end, the center is beginning a series of women’s food entrepreneurship courses, teaching underemployed women the skills needed to operate a small food business. The project goal is to address hunger and malnutrition by helping low-income women and their families become economically self-sufficient. During the grant period, the center plans to support at least ten students in successfully launching their own businesses. New partner, new project.
