New BGR partner the Mahlathini Development Foundation (MDF) works in rural South Africa to provide climate-resilient training and resources primarily for smallholder farmers. In carrying out its agriculture training groups, MDF encountered a number of vulnerable young women, many of them single mothers, who sought to participate in the training groups but were unable to due to child care and other responsibilities. As societal social safety nets fail, many of these women find themselves alone without educational or financial resources to provide for themselves and their children.

MDF’s Young Mothers Care Groups project is responding to the needs of these women in rural KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo, South Africa. Through village-based care groups, 30 single mothers of young children receive training and material support for starting home vegetable gardens, as well as education about nutrition, child care, and health care. The health and nutrition trainings are expected to provide learning and support for 60 additional interested women in the local communities.
