In the Campo Grande district of the city São Paulo, many of the approximately 97,000 residents lack access to basic needs such as healthy food and decent living conditions. Social services such as schools and hospitals are stretched thin, literacy rates are low, and high percentages of women and children suffer physical and mental domestic violence.
This project with BGR partner GAIA is helping women, many of them mothers, to lift themselves and their families out of poverty by supporting training for 80 women in pattern making and sewing. Through weekly workshops, the women learn the theoretical and technical skills needed for employment as seamstresses, or to start their own small businesses. This project will bring improved earning potential to 80 women, empowering them within their families and communities.
