BGR partner Building Bridges India works to support and empower the widows of men who committed suicide because of poverty and indebtedness, leaving the debt to their widows. These women, often uneducated and without options for employment, often lose their land and homes. Through a previous BGR-funded project, Building Bridges India established vocational training programs providing coursework in basic sewing and embroidery, traditional phulkari embroidery, garment and home décor design, entrepreneurship, and business skills. The women who have participated reported an average 75 percent income increase. In addition to supporting training in the five existing centers, this year’s grant will establish vocational training programs in five additional centers, training an additional 125 women and offering new workshops in entrepreneurship, functional and numerical literacy, and other topics. Annually renewable project
